What is Abuse?

 

Abuse by an intimate partner is an ongoing pattern of control and intimidation that escalates over time. Abuse can be physical and nonphysical. It initially confuses a victim to have the person they love treat them with contempt, accusations or violence. Many victims feel guilty and try to modify their behavior -- to be better, more attentive, more affectionate. However, abusers do not change without intervention. Abuse intimidates and diminishes a victim's ability to cope and think clearly. Reaching out for help is the first step away from abuse and toward empowerment.
